An ophtalmologist is an eye doctor who can perform both medical and surgical treatments for all eye conditions. Ophthamologists hold a PhD in Ophthamology or MPhil Ophthamology which is awarded by higher education institutes.

They can also identify some eye conditions that would then be referred to an ophthamologist for further evaluation. Optometrists hold a BSc Optometry degree that is awarded by higher education institutes.
