Multifocal glasses demand more of you than you might think

A classic multifocal lens combines three focal lengths in a single lens. This works well for many people. However, it has two measurable consequences: a narrower field of clear vision, and more strain on your head and neck. Morrow tackles precisely these two issues.

What happens behind a traditional multifocal lens

  1. 01

    1. Blurred edges

    The edges of a multifocal lens distort the light. As a result, the image sometimes appears to ripple when you move your head. Eye care professionals refer to this as the ‘swim effect’.

  2. 02

    2. More head movements

    The sharp focus area of the lens is narrow. As a result, wearers of multifocal lenses tend to turn their heads more often, whereas otherwise they would simply move their eyes. Research conducted in traffic conditions showed that wearers of progressive lenses turn their heads significantly more than people who do not wear them.

  3. 03

    3. A stiff neck

    This constant readjustment puts strain on the neck muscles. Studies have linked difficulty focusing with increased tension in the shoulder and neck muscles.

  4. 04

    4. Unsteady on the stairs

    In a standard lens, the reading zone is at the bottom. That is exactly where you look through when you’re going down a flight of stairs. As a result, the steps appear less sharply defined, and wearers of multifocal lenses descend more slowly and cautiously.

Morrow isn’t for everyone.

For many wearers, traditional multifocal glasses remain the right choice. Are you happy with them? Then there’s no need to change anything.

Morrow is particularly well suited to you if you:

  • have problems with your current multifocal glasses, or have never worn any;
  • lead an active life, both indoors and outdoors, and are always on the move;
  • if you want to see clearly, particularly at a distance and at arm’s length, with the ability to read when needed;
  • have a reading prescription of +2.00 D or more.

Less suitable if you:

  • spends hours reading or works all day in front of a computer screen.

Your optician will work with you to find out what works best for you.
